NXP Semiconductors announces the S32N55 processor, the first member of the S32N family of ultra-integrated in-vehicle processors. The S32N55, the core of the recently announced S32 CoreRide central computing solution, delivers a scalable combination of secure, real-time and application processing to meet the diverse central computing needs of automotive manufacturers.

The S32N55, the core of the recently announced S32 CoreRide central computing solution, delivers a scalable combination of secure, real-time and application processing to meet the diverse central computing needs of automotive manufacturers. The S32N55 processor excises in secure, centralized, real-time vehicle control, which requires high-performance, deterministic computing power to support the highest level of functional safety. With software-defined hardware-enforced isolation, the S32N55 can host dozens of automotive functions with varying levels of importance while avoiding interference between them.

     The vehicle powertrain, chassis control, body and other core automotive functions have always been implemented as separate electronic control units (ECUs), each with its own microcontroller and wiring. Now, multiple automotive functions can be safely integrated into an S32N55 processor with multiple isolated execution environments, breaking through the SDV integration barrier.

This "ultra-high integration" capability allows automakers to significantly reduce ECU hardware costs. The reduction in materials used and the reduction in weight also contribute to sustainability and extended driving range. Finally, fewer ECUs and significantly reduced wiring could help automakers reduce manufacturing complexity and shorten manufacturing time.

     With the S32N55's "kernel-to-pin" hardware isolation and virtualization technology, its resources can be dynamically partitioned to meet changing automotive functional requirements in the most appropriate way over time. Hardware-enforced isolation of vehicle functions enables automakers to safely integrate ECUs, simplify software development and support enhancements and upgrades throughout the life cycle. Car functions can be managed independently, including troubleshooting and resetting. With the S32N55's functionally safe, high-granularity over-the-air (OTA) upgrade capabilities, they can do software updates independently, a key capability for SDVS to enhance their functionality over time.

     Ray Cornyn, senior vice president and general manager of automotive processors at NXP, said: "The S32N55 processor is the real-time automotive control hub for NXP's new S32 CoreRide platform. With a powerful combination of excellent real-time performance, critical hardware forced isolation, and connected vehicle capabilities, it can deliver more functionality with fewer devices while reducing costs and providing upgrades to help improve future-proof vehicles."
