Nexperia expands its power device portfolio with the addition of standard and vehicle-scale ideal diodes
Nexperia has announced the addition of two ideal diode ics to its expanding portfolio of power devices. The NID5100 is suitable for standard industrial and consumer applications, while the NID5100-Q100 is certified for automotive applications. Both ideal diodes are based on MOSFETs and have a lower forward voltage drop than conventional diodes, making them ideal for replacing standard diodes in systems to meet the associated ultra-high energy efficiency requirements.
The NID5100 and NID5100-Q100 ideal diodes come in small TSSP6/ SOT362-2 pin plastic packages with dimensions of only 2.1 mm x 1.25 mm x 0.95 mm. The excellent electrical performance of the NID5100 ideal diode provides many benefits for applications such as smart meters, fire/safety sensors, battery-powered wearables and automotive telematics devices (T-Boxes).
The NID5100 is an ideal PMOs-based diode that supports regulating the voltage between the "anode" and "cathode" through the gate voltage of the internal MOSFETs, with a forward voltage reduction of 8 to 10 times compared to similar rated Schottky diodes. In addition to the very low forward voltage drop, the ideal MOSFEt-based diode also helps reduce the reverse DC leakage current to 100 times that of a typical Schottky diode.
Unlike other ideal diodes in its class, the NID5100 supports "OR-ing" multiple power supplies while retaining reverse polarity protection and is very responsive, helping to ensure smooth power transfer. Nexperia's ideal diode also has other advantages, such as forward regulation voltages up to 31 mV (typical), the ability to handle forward currents up to 1.5 A, and automatic conversion between OR-ed power supplies. The device operates in a voltage range of 1.2V to 5.5V and has very low current consumption, with a 3.3V VIN shutdown current of only 170nA and a static current of 240nA. With an absolute maximum reverse voltage protection rating of -6V and support for output status indication (ST), the diode is a robust and efficient choice for power management applications.
