Samsung Electronics announced that it has successfully developed its first 16Gb DDR5 DRAM using 12-nanometer (nm) technology and completed a compatibility evaluation with AMD

     Samsung Electronics announced that it has successfully developed its first 16 Gb DDR5 DRAM built with 12 nanometer (nm) level technology, and completed a product evaluation with AMD for compatibility. Based on the latest DDR5 standard, Samsung's 12nm level DRAM will unlock speeds of up to 7.2 gigabits per second (Gbps). That means processing two 30GB UHD movies in one second.

     Jooyoung Lee, senior vice president and head of DRAM products and technology at Samsung Electronics, said: "Samsung's 12nm class DRAM will be a key factor in driving widespread adoption of DDR5 DRAM across the market. "With superior performance and energy efficiency, we expect the new DRAM to be the foundation for more sustainable operations in next-generation computing, data centers and AI-powered systems."

     "Innovation often involves working closely with industry partners to broaden the boundaries of technology," said Joe Macri, senior vice president, corporate fellow and customer, Computing and graphics Chief Technology Officer at AMD. "We are excited to be working with Samsung again, especially with DDR5 memory products optimized and validated on the Zen platform."

     The technological breakthrough was made possible through the use of a new high-dielectric (high-k) material to increase battery capacitance, as well as patented design techniques that improve key circuit characteristics. Combined with advanced multilayer extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, the new DRAM boasts Samsung's highest DDR5 Die density, boosting wafer productivity by 20 percent.

     With the mass production of the new DRAM in 2023, Samsung plans to expand this DRAM product, which is based on advanced 12nm class process technology, to a broader market segment, while continuing to work with industry partners to drive the rapid development of next-generation computing. The new DRAM offers both superior speed and improved energy efficiency. The 12-nm DRAM reduces power consumption by about 23 percent compared to the previous generation of Samsung DRAM, making IT a preferred solution for global IT companies that pursue eco-friendly management.
